What inner diameter means for fit
The millimetre size is the hoop's inner diameter, the open space inside the ring. That space is what sits against the back of the lobe when the huggie is closed, so it's the number that decides how snug or relaxed the earring feels. A smaller inner diameter hugs closer to the piercing; a larger one leaves more room to move.
Hoop clearance and comfort
Clearance is the gap left between the hoop and your lobe once it's fastened. Too little and the earring can feel tight or press when you sleep or wear headphones; a little more clearance lets the hoop settle naturally and rotate freely. Both sizes use the same 1.5mm hoop width, so the band thickness is identical, only the clearance changes.
